About this work
McMartin Villa, Bermuda 1977
A swimmer glides through clear blue water in the foreground, only her head and shoulders above the surface. Behind the pool stands a white villa with arches and a double staircase. A woman in a bikini walks along the edge, followed by a waiter in a white jacket. Guests sit at tables under fringed parasols.
Guests around the pool at Elephant Walk, Duncan McMartin's villa in Bermuda, in September 1977. In this shot Slim Aarons has a swimmer at the front in the water, the only figure lying horizontally. Behind her everything stands upright: the villa, the parasols, the waiter walking with measured steps behind the woman in the bikini. The contrast between service and vacation sits in one strip along the edge.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
