About this work
New England Skiing, New Hampshire 1955
A man in a cap and glasses unfastens skis from a rack on the back of a small white car, with an OFFICIAL sticker on the window. Beside him a woman in a polka-dot jacket looks on; they stand in the snow. Skiers walk behind them, and in the distance a snowy hill lies under a clear sky.
A couple get ready for a day of skiing in New Hampshire in 1955. Slim Aarons photographed it in black and white, from a low angle and up close. The long skis stick up at an angle from the rounded back of the car and cut diagonally through the empty sky. That line gives an everyday moment, the unloading, the momentum of what is still to come on the slope.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
