Dining Al Fresco, Barbados 1976
Two men in white shirts sit facing each other at a small table with a white cloth on a red-brick terrace. Beside the left chair a red cat lies on a stool. Behind the low wall with flowerpots a garden climbs in terraces: lawns, flowering shrubs, a staircase and a pavilion. Leaves hang from the top edge.
Victor Marson (left) and George Amos dined in the garden of Highclere Estate in Barbados in April 1976. Slim Aarons places the two small at the bottom of the frame and lets the garden above take the space. The men thus become part of the landscape, not its subject; the branches along the top edge work as a frame that keeps the whole close.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
