About this work
Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc, Antibes 1978
From high above you look down on a swimming pool between gray rocks by the sea, with a single swimmer in the green water. On the terraces around it stand dozens of white parasols and loungers, and guests walk between the rocks. Beyond lies the deep blue sea with motorboats, a sailboat and a row of buoys; at lower right, orange roof tiles slide into the frame.
Guests around the swimming pool of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, on the French Riviera, in August 1978. The wide crop gives the sea almost half the image. Against that open blue the terrace becomes a narrow strip of human order at the edge of the rock: parasol beside parasol, lounger beside lounger, and beyond it only water and a few small boats that seem to bob along detached from it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
