About this work
The Family Ford, Michigan 1957
Five people pose in front of an enormous, richly carved fireplace in a dark wood-paneled room. Two women are seated: the older one in black with a pearl necklace on a damask armchair, the younger one in a red dress in the middle. Three men in suits stand and sit around them. On the left stands a vase of red roses, on the right a vase of white ones.
In June 1957 Aarons photographed Mrs Edsel Ford at her home in Grosse Point Shores, Michigan, with her sons Henry II, Benson and William, and in the middle her daughter Josephine. The picture appeared in A Wonderful Time. The fireplace does the work of a family tree: it towers above the family, bigger and heavier than anyone in front of it, and turns a group portrait into the portrait of a house.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
