About this work
Get Ahead Get A Phone, Piraeus 1978
A man in a light gray jacket sits at his desk with a white telephone receiver at each ear. One he clamps between shoulder and cheek, the other he holds; with his free hand he slides a pen between the papers in a folder. The coiled cords hang over his arm. Behind him, out of focus, stand a cabinet and a painting.
Greek shipowner George Vardinoyannis was making two phone calls at once in his office in Piraeus in June 1978. The title turns it into a joke; the picture stays serious. Vardinoyannis looks down, concentrating, and pays the camera no attention at all. That makes the scene believable: not a pose for the photograph but a working day that simply carries on, with two lines open and a third task in hand.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
