About this work
Alice Wesselhoeft Saltonstall, Palm Beach circa 1958
A woman in a long, pale floral dress and a sheer scarf stands barefoot on the edge of a stepped fountain. The water runs down steps of green and brown tiles into a star-shaped basin below; flowers float on the water. Around her lies a garden with palms, hedges and a canopy of leaves that softens the light.
Alice Wesselhoeft Saltonstall, wife of Senator Leverett Saltonstall, was photographed in Palm Beach around 1958. She stands not beside the fountain but on it, barefoot in the water, and that makes the portrait unusual. The tiled steps lead the eye from the star-shaped basin below up to her, so the fountain works like a pedestal. At the same time the wet tilework lends the formal pose something casual.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
