About this work
Abercorns On Windermere, Bahamas 1980
Beneath a wall of palm fronds, a man in a lilac shirt sits in a white wicker chair on the sand. Beside him a woman stands barefoot in a long orange printed dress. One child leans over the armrest, another sits on the ground in front of the chair. Books lie on a small wicker table; coconuts are scattered across the sand.
James and Alexandra Hamilton, the fifth Duke and Duchess of Abercorn, were on vacation on Windermere Island in the Bahamas in April 1980, with their children Sophia and James. The family portrait takes place at the edge of the palm grove, not by the water: the fronds fill two thirds of the vertical frame. That makes the group small and relaxed, a family in a clearing rather than a posed portrait.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
