About this work
Mrs. A. Watson Armour III, Lake Forest 1960
A woman in a floral print dress stands on a broad strip of grass between two rows of tall, neatly clipped trees. She is laughing. To her left two poodles sit in the grass, one gray and one black. The avenue runs straight on into the background, where a glimpse of a building appears among the green.
Mrs. A. Watson Armour III walked with her poodles across her estate in Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1960. In the photograph she stands still, and the avenue does the work. The two rows of trees run toward a single point in the distance and draw the eye back, while the woman and the dogs stand right of center. So the estate takes the leading role, and its owner becomes a small, cheerful accent within it.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
