About this work
Ursula Andress, Rome 1955
Two young women lie among bunches of pink gladioli. In front, one leans against a red cushion on the floor, in a white top and pink shorts, and looks into the camera. Behind her a second lies in a hammock with a book in her lap. The wall behind is painted with line drawings; above them hangs a portrait of a woman with large eyes.
Swiss film star Ursula Andress, on the left, relaxed in Rome in 1955 with the artist Novella Parigini. The picture is layered: women, flowers, drawn figures on the wall and a painted face looking out over everything. That portrait gives the photograph a third gaze. Andress looks into the lens, Parigini lies back in the hammock, and the painted woman above stares forward just as fixedly as the film star.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
