About this work
Droulers And Daughters, Cernobbio circa 1984
In a hall with marble columns, vaulted ceilings and chandeliers, a woman in a red dress sits on a gilded chair, the fabric of her skirt spread across the carpet. On either side stand two girls in white dresses, each holding a flower. Behind them the hall runs far back, past flower arrangements and blue armchairs.
Roberta Droulers sat here around 1984 with her daughters Nathalie and Virginie in the lobby of the Villa d'Este on Lake Como, in Cernobbio. It is an arranged group, and the picture does not hide it. The three are placed exactly on the axis of the hall, so the row of columns and the second chandelier behind them recede like a stage set. The red of the dress stands out in a room of cream, gold and blue.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
