About this work
Casa Las Estacas, Puerto Vallarta 1979
On a rocky terrace by the sea guests in white and pink stand and sit among blue air mattresses and inner tubes. On the left flowers hang over a pergola and stone walls; on the right the surf breaks white against the rocks. A few people stand on a rock jutting out over the water. Beyond, a blue sea and a mountainous coast stretch away.
Slim Aarons photographed in April 1979 at Casa Las Estacas, in the resort town of Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco, Mexico. The caption mentions Gunzburg's pool; what the picture mainly shows is a terrace among the rocks, with air mattresses and guests close to the surf. The viewpoint from above keeps the soft and the hard half equal in the frame: on the left flowers, cushions and guests, on the right the sea breaking in foam on the rocks.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
