About this work
Porto Ercole Beach, Tuscany 1991
From above you look down on a narrow strip of stone along the sea, filled with sun loungers under red and blue umbrellas. A stairway and low walls climb the slope to a grassy terrace. On the left the water is so clear that you can see the rocks on the bottom; farther off, small boats lie at anchor below a green, rocky headland.
Slim Aarons photographed this quiet stretch of coast in Porto Ercole, Tuscany, in July 1991. The high vantage point makes the difference. From up here the umbrellas become a pattern of red and blue circles following the line of the coast, and the water becomes a gradient from turquoise to deep blue. The people are almost invisible. What you see is how a piece of rock has been ordered into a place to lie down.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
