About this work
George Hamilton, Capri 1968
Three people sit close together in the sun on loungers with turquoise towels. On the left a woman with long blonde hair, a black bikini and long bead necklaces looks into the camera. Behind her a tanned man with a gold chain leans back and looks aside. In front a woman with a towel wrapped as a turban and an orange bikini bows her head with a smile.
The American actor George Hamilton relaxed on a deckchair on Capri in 1968, with his future wife Alana Collins, also known as Alana Hamilton and Alana Stewart, on the left. Slim Aarons stacks the three figures in the vertical format from back to front, and each looks a different way: she into the lens, he to the side, the woman in front downward. That keeps the photograph moving even though nothing happens.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
