About this work
Eden Roc Hotel, Cap d'Antibes 1976
From the air you see a long avenue run through a dense pine forest, from a white hotel with rows of windows to the rocky coast. There stands a pavilion with a red roof, with a terrace full of white parasols in front of it. In the white rocks lies a rectangular swimming pool, just above the sea. Beyond the forest the coast disappears in a light haze.
The Hotel du Cap Eden Roc at Cap d'Antibes on the French Riviera, in August 1976. Slim Aarons photographed it from a great height, in line with the avenue. As a result the picture reads like a floor plan: the hotel at the top, then the straight line through the green, the water at the bottom. Everything leads to the edge of the rocks, where the guests sit; the forest in between is the distance you cover in a single glance.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
