About this work
Royal Winner, 1955
Prince Philip stands in a black shirt with orange trim and white riding breeches in front of a dense crowd, a towel over his arm and a silver cup at the bottom. Beside him Queen Elizabeth II laughs, in a dress with a blue-and-white print and a pearl necklace, her hands clasped. Behind the wooden fence the public presses forward, many with a camera to their face.
In 1955 Prince Philip's Windsor Park Team, which he also captained, beat India in the polo tournament during Ascot week, which he sponsored. The Windsor Cup was presented by Queen Elizabeth II, who stands beside him here. Slim Aarons made no formal trophy picture of it: the cup hangs half out of frame, and it is the queen's laugh that carries the photograph, while the crowd behind the fence records everything.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
