About this work
Harbour Area, Portofino 1977
Behind a branch of pink flowers a harbor full of boats opens up: rowboats and dinghies packed close at the quay, larger white yachts further out. On the left stand tall houses in ochre and pink with awnings above the waterfront; on the right a green hill climbs, with a villa and umbrella pines on top. In the distance the sea lies under a clear sky.
An overview of the harbor of Portofino, Italy, in 1977, full of small and large boats. Aarons photographs over the flowers, which hang blurred and bright in the left corner, and so gives the image a spectator: someone standing on a terrace looking down. That edge of pink makes the difference between a postcard and a view that seems to be your own.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
