About this work
Seekirchl In Seefeld, February 1985
A white chapel with two towers, one with a pointed onion spire, the other with a dome under a cap of snow, stands in a snowy valley. To the right lies an ice rink with skaters and spectators; in front of it people walk along a path beside a red fence. Behind the pines and a hotel, jagged peaks rise against a clear blue sky.
The Seekirchl in Seefeld, Austria, in February 1985. The chapel stands on the left of the frame, bright and compact, and the busy part of the village winter has moved to the right: the rink, the walkers, the hotel. In this way Aarons lets two tempos exist side by side. The church stands still under its cap of snow, while village life goes on around it, small and almost unnoticed beneath the mountains.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
