About this work
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan 1960
From a great height you look straight down a covered passage: two richly decorated facades with statues, balconies and windows run toward a distant arch, and above them spans a roof of glass and iron. On the tiled floor with its geometric patterns dozens of small figures walk, alone or in groups. At lower right stand a terrace and a green awning.
A view through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, in 1960. The covered arcade lies on the north side of the Piazza del Duomo. Aarons chooses the center and a high vantage point, so that all the lines of facades, balustrades and glass ribs converge on one point in the distance, where daylight falls through the arch. The people below become almost dots; the building is the main character here.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
