About this work
Scottsdale Home, Scottsdale 1973
On a white terrace at the edge of a mountain slope two women lie on wheeled lounge chairs, one in purple, the other in a red-and-white striped dress with a glass in her hand. From the left a blonde woman in a white dress and dark cardigan walks into the frame. Behind the pool guests stand under a pergola of white pillars; on the right a bare mountain ridge rises.
Guests by the pool at the home of Wayne Beal in Scottsdale, Arizona, in January 1973. Aarons takes a step back and shows where the house stands: on the left the land falls away to a wide plain, on the right the mountain closes the frame. The figures are scattered across the white surface, each with a sharp shadow of its own, like pieces on a board laid out at the edge of the desert.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
