About this work
Donna Fabrizia Lanza Di Mazzarino, Sicily 1984
In a white rowboat on a green pond with water lilies, a woman in a pink hat lies back, dressed in pink and white, one arm over the side. Palms, ferns and dense shrubbery grow around the pond; orange flowers bloom in front. Behind the greenery stands a villa of salmon-colored stone, with balustrades, balconies and an ornate crowning.
Donna Fabrizia Lanza di Mazzarino at the Villa Tasca in Sicily, Italy, in 1984. Aarons photographs her not in front of the villa but in the water before it, with the house far behind her and the greenery close around her. The boat lies still, she lies still, and the pond is so green that everything in it seems to sink. The image becomes about slowness: an afternoon in which nothing needs to be done.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
