About this work
Auersperg Picnic, Salzburg 1979
A family picnics around a red blanket in tall grass: two men and a woman in a scarf sit, a girl in red and a small blond child in yellow tights stand, as does a man in a burgundy jacket. Black dogs sit on either side. Behind them, among autumn trees, stands a castle with a tall tower; horses graze by a fence.
Prince Franz von Auersperg and his family picnicked in 1979 outside the family castle near Salzburg, Austria. Aarons keeps the castle small and distant, in the upper corner, and gives most of the frame to grass, blanket and children. The property is present but does not impose itself; what counts is the family sitting there under the trees, with two black dogs guarding the edges of the group like sentries.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
