About this work
Yachting Holiday, Italy 1980
From high above you look down on deep blue water where a handful of boats lie at anchor. At the bottom a wooden speedboat floats with people in the sun on the rear deck; in the middle lies a white motor yacht with a yellow tender beside it. Farther away sailboats and yachts are scattered, and at the very top a fast boat draws a white line through the water.
A small flotilla of pleasure boats lay at anchor in the sea off the Italian coast in August 1980. Slim Aarons photographed it from a great height, so that the horizon disappears and the water fills the whole frame. The sea becomes a blue ground on which the boats stand as separate figures, from large in the foreground to small in the distance. The white wake at the top is the only thing that moves; the rest of the fleet lies still.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
