About this work
Anna Maria Alberghetti, Lake Tahoe 1959
On a large granite boulder by the water a young woman lies on her stomach on a pink cushion, in a yellow top and dark trousers, with a fishing rod in her hands. More boulders lie around her and the water glitters in the backlight. Behind her tall pines surround a wooden house. In the foreground a rope runs across the stone.
The Italian opera singer and actress Anna Maria Alberghetti took a break from her performances at a local nightclub at Lake Tahoe in the United States in 1959. Slim Aarons keeps her small in the frame, on top of the biggest stone, and gives the rest to granite, water and trees. It is exactly that proportion that makes the calm visible: nothing of the nightclub stage is left here, only a woman taking her time.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
