About this work
Signpost In St. Moritz, 1963
A wooden post is covered in signs: at the top reddish-brown boards with piste names and numbers, below them blue and green signs with white letters and arrows, some with the walking time in hours. A few signs hang crooked. Behind the post skiers stand in the snow, out of focus, one of them bent forward beside the skis. The sky is white and cloudy.
A signpost to ski runs and toboggan tracks in St. Moritz, Switzerland, in March 1963. Slim Aarons put the post right in front of the lens and let the people behind it blur. That reverses the usual proportion: the signs are the main subject and the skiers form the setting. The colors do the work, red above, blue and green below, and the tangle of directions shows how much there was to choose from on a single mountain.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
