About this work
To Any Lengths, Las Vegas 1954
At the top of an extended ladder on a red ladder truck sits a man with a camera, high against a blue sky. Below him, at the edge of a swimming pool, a woman in a red-and-white striped swimsuit lies on a white lounge chair, a towel over the backrest. Next to the ladder stands a diving board; by the low building behind it, a small group of people stands.
According to the caption, the man on the ladder is photographer Slim Aarons himself, at the pool of the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas in 1954, photographing film starlet Mara Lane. So the picture shows someone taking a picture. The ladder draws a long diagonal from the truck at lower left to the man at the top, and the woman lies at lower right, as far from him as possible. Almost the whole image lies between those two.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
