About this work
C.Z. Guest, Palm Beach circa 1955
A blonde woman in a white summer suit with a pink belt walks barefoot down a wide white staircase, straight toward the camera, with a faint smile. To her left a small white poodle trots along; to her right a large Great Dane steps with its head lowered. Behind her rise a white facade with green doors and a row of columns.
The American socialite C. Z. Guest, Mrs. Winston F. C. Guest, with a poodle and a Great Dane at her oceanfront estate, Villa Artemis in Palm Beach, Florida, around 1955. Aarons has the three come down the stairs together, and the difference in size makes the picture: the small dog, the woman, the big animal. They walk toward you at the same pace, and that gives the severe white architecture a lightness.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
