About this work
Pool By The Sea, Angra dos Reis 1985
A swimming pool of clear turquoise water lies in a wooden terrace over the sea, built half around a large, smooth rock. On the deck, lounge chairs stand under a white parasol, someone swims and a blue ring floats in the water. At lower left a man in a white T-shirt walks with a tray of drinks. Out at sea lies a white motorboat, with mountains beyond.
A swimming pool and lounge deck over the sea at Angra dos Reis, Brazil, in 1985. Aarons photographs from a higher point, with branches as a frame in the upper left corner. The rock built into the terrace and the plants in the foreground keep nature in the picture, while pool and deck are strictly geometric. The two balance each other, and so the whole looks like a place that grew out of the coast.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
