About this work
David Nightingale Hicks, Windermere Island 1980
A man with slicked-back hair sits on the edge of a white table, in a pink double-breasted blazer and white trousers, one hand on the back of a white chair. Behind him hangs a large square canvas with pink, turquoise and red diamonds around a yellow disc. On the table stands a bowl of pineapples; a white fan hangs from the ceiling.
Interior designer David Nightingale Hicks was photographed in April 1980 on Windermere Island in the Bahamas. Everything in the picture seems coordinated: the pink of the blazer returns in the painting, the white of the trousers in the table, the chairs and the floor. Aarons places Hicks right in front of the canvas, so that the yellow disc hangs beside his head. The portrait becomes an interior in which the man himself is a spot of color.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
