About this work
Tina Onassis, Palm Beach 1968
A woman with sleek, combed-back blonde hair and a big pink bow at her neck sits at a table with a rose-print cloth, her chin on her hand. She looks to the side, past the camera. In front of her stands a red dessert dish with a scoop of ice cream and a spoon, and beside it a wine glass. She wears a pastel check dress and a turquoise earring.
In April 1968 Slim Aarons photographed Athina Livanos Onassis in Palm Beach, after her divorce from the Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, whose first wife she had been. She looks away, lost in thought. The colors around her are soft and summery: pink, mint, the rose pattern on the tablecloth. Her face stands apart from them, and that distance between the cheerful setting and the quiet gaze gives the picture its weight.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
