About this work
Marisa Berenson, Capri 1968
Seen from above, from the head end, a woman lies stretched out on a turquoise towel. Her face is hidden behind the green scarf around her head; mostly you see legs, belly and arms in the sun. She wears a black bikini with transparent straps, a thin chain around her waist, rings and a gold watch. Beside her lies a brown bag on a piece of dotted fabric.
Capri, 1968: the American actress Marisa Berenson lies in the sun. Slim Aarons chooses an inverted perspective here. The face, normally the center of a portrait, disappears under the headscarf at the bottom edge, while the legs fill the upper part of the picture. Through that foreshortening the body becomes a shape of diagonals, and the details, chain, watch and rings, become the landmarks.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
