About this work
Everglades Tennis Club, Palm Beach 1968
Between two palms you look down on a row of green tennis courts with white lines. In front a player in white hits a ball, further off others play. Behind the courts stands a pavilion with green-and-white striped awnings, and on the right a light building with red tile roofs and a tower. A green fence runs along the edge, with cumulus clouds above.
Slim Aarons photographed the Everglades Tennis Club in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1968. He stands high and frames the courts with two palm trunks, left and right, and a crown of leaves hanging over the top edge. That way you watch the matches as if from a hidden spot. The green of courts, awnings and fence holds the picture together; only the red roofs stand out.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
