About this work
Cortina d'Ampezzo, February 1962
Two waiters in white jackets bend over a small table with a red-and-white checked cloth. The younger one pours from a bottle above a stack of plates with crêpes, the older one holds a spoon over a pan on a chafing dish. On the table stand a silver pitcher and a bottle with a label. Behind them guests sit at tables with candles, under lamps with white shades.
In February 1962 Slim Aarons photographed waiters making crêpes suzette in a restaurant in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He focuses on the hands and the bent heads: the two men work as one, the young and the older shoulder to shoulder. The white of their jackets stands out against the dark room, so that the work at the table is the center and the guests behind become setting.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
