About this work
Mazatlan Mansion, January 1984
Tall palms with smooth white trunks rise into a blue sky. Beneath them, between dense greenery and a shrub with red flowers, lies a round swimming pool with turquoise water. One man swims, another sits on the edge. In the foreground a woman in a bikini lies on a wicker lounger on the tiled terrace; at the back guests sit under a white parasol.
Eldorado was the villa of the Redo family in Mazatlán, Mexico, where Slim Aarons took photographs in January 1984. He chooses a vertical format and gives the upper two thirds to the palms. The pool, where everything happens, thus becomes a small detail at the bottom. That proportion says more about the place than an overview photo would: the people here are guests of the garden.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
