About this work
Marie-Louise Scio, Montecatini 1980
In a tall, vaulted window recess in an ochre wall stands a woman in a fuchsia leotard with a turtleneck and orange tights. She raises one arm, holds the other out to the side, and extends one leg sideways as if beginning a dance step. Around the window runs a gray stone frame with a triangular pediment; beneath her feet a wrought-iron balustrade. Behind her it is dark.
Marie-Louise Scio posed in November 1980 in a leotard at the Tettuccio Terme in Montecatini, Italy. Slim Aarons uses the architecture as a frame: the window is just big enough for her figure, and the darkness behind separates her from the building. The colors do the rest: fuchsia and orange against ochre and gray, and a pose that briefly sets the rigid window in motion.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
