About this work

Marisa Berenson, Capri 1968

Close-up: Marisa Berenson lies in the sun with her eyes closed, her head wrapped in an olive-green scarf. Green eyeshadow glistens on her eyelids, and drops of water stand on her skin. She wears a black bikini top with transparent plastic straps and metal snaps. Beneath her lies a white towel, with a strip of turquoise at the bottom edge.

Slim Aarons photographed the American actress Marisa Berenson in 1968 as she sunbathed on Capri. He comes so close that nothing of the island is left: no sea, no rock, only skin, fabric and light. The green of the scarf returns on her eyelids, the black of the top is broken by the transparent straps. The face is the resting point among all those materials.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
