About this work
Palm Beach Habituees, Palm Beach 1970
A man and a woman stand on the steps beneath a tall pointed arch with a scalloped edge, he leaning one arm against a column. Both wear a flower-print wrap around the hips, he bare-chested, she in a bikini top. Above them runs a band of painted tiles under a red tile roof; red bougainvillea blooms on the right, brightly colored shrubs stand on the left.
According to the caption these are Mr and Mrs Guillermo Aguilera, photographed in Palm Beach in 1970. The archive text says nothing more. The image plays with proportion: the two figures take up barely a fifth of the height, and the gateway above them claims the rest. That makes the house the portrait and the couple its measure; only on a second look do you see how relaxed they are within that frame.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
