About this work
The Costa-Delords, Asolo 1988
Two young women stand back to back and look into the camera, each under a straw hat. The one on the left wears a light pink blouse, a gold necklace and a hat with a patterned band; the one on the right a white blouse with a red sweater over her shoulders and a hat with an openwork crown. Behind them a garden with cypresses dissolves into green blurs.
Delfina Costa-Delord and Alessia Costa-Delord posed for a portrait in Asolo, Italy, in September 1988, each wearing a hat. Slim Aarons made the photograph; which of the two is which, the caption does not say. The strength lies in repetition with a difference: two hats, two gazes, two almost identical faces, but one looks open and the other has something reserved about the mouth. The blurred background leaves nothing but that comparison.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
