About this work

Santa And Serena Antonelli, Florence 1983

Three women sit at a small round table with a white lace cloth on a roof terrace, among pots of pink hydrangeas and yellow flowers. On the table are glasses, plates and a bowl. In front of them terracotta roof tiles run out of the frame; behind them the city stretches to the hills, with a large dome on the left and a tall tower on the right.

According to the caption, Santa and Serena Antonelli dined al fresco with a guest in 1983 on the terrace of their home in Florence, Italy. Beyond them rise the dome of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore and the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio. Slim Aarons made the photograph. The image works through scale: the table is small and domestic, the city behind it monumental, and yet that city seems to have been set up just for this lunch.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
