About this work
Hotel du Cap, Antibes 1976
From high above you look down on a large white hotel with gray slate roofs, laid out symmetrically around a lawn and a stairway at the front. From the rear a straight avenue runs through a dense pine forest to the sea. A few yachts lie on the water; on the horizon there is a long, low island and a hazy mountain range.
Slim Aarons took this aerial photograph of the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, in August 1976. The vertical format captures the whole route: from the driveway at the bottom, past the building and along the avenue through the woods, to the water at the top. That single straight line divides the picture in two and turns the hotel into a mirror-image form. So you read the photograph more as a ground plan than as a vacation picture.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
