About this work
Catherine Wilke, Capri 1980
Five rows of white cushions lie like steps against an orange tile wall, three women in the sun on them. At the top a blonde woman in a blue bikini props herself on an elbow; in the middle one lies on her stomach; at the bottom a woman in a straw hat lies beside a book. At the pool's edge stands a fourth, both hands in her hair.
Hotel Punta Tragara on Capri, 1980: Catherine Wilke joined the sunbathers Elisabetta Catalano, Charlotte Ticken and Pamela Grupas. The caption does not say which of the women in the picture is which. Slim Aarons photographs the wall straight on, across the water. The standing woman forms the vertical axis of the picture: her body cuts through the horizontal rows of cushions, while the others, each on a step of her own, stay lying.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
