About this work
Kasimir Korybut, Ocho Rios 1971
A long bamboo raft drifts in shallow, crystal-clear water. At the front stands a raftsman with a long pole; at the back a man and a woman in a red bikini sit on a bench. On the left a palm tree leans over the water from the bank. In the distance lie a sandbar, a green coastline and mountains under cumulus clouds.
Kasimir Korybut and Michelle Vaughan began a raft trip up the White River at Ocho Rios, Jamaica, in 1971. Slim Aarons kept his distance and let the slanting palm trunk divide the frame in two. On the left lies the bank, on the right the raft on its way to open water. The couple sit still, the raftsman is the only one working; his pole slants against the line of the palm.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
