About this work
Hotel On Lake Como, Villa d'Este 1983
From high above the lake you look down on a rectangular swimming pool floating on the water, with a green jetty below it where motorboats and launches are moored in a row. On the quay, white parasols stand among the trees. Farther along the shore, villas with red roofs sit among the greenery, and beyond the lake wooded hills rise in the haze.
The pool and jetty of the Villa d'Este Hotel on Lake Como, in June 1983. The upright format works here like a map: boats at the bottom, the pool in the middle, the shore at the top fading into the distance. Aarons chooses a vantage point from which the pool becomes a bright blue plane in the dark lake water, a small piece of made water in a natural lake. That doubling gives the picture its humor.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
