About this work

Las Brisas, 1978

On a large smooth rock a woman lies on her front on a white mattress, a glass in her hand, looking down. Below her a small pool sits in the rocks with a few people in it, and beyond that the sea glitters like silver. On the left a table with dishes on a lower terrace, on the right a white stair rail. Trees on the cliff above.

The coastline near Warren Avis' villa at Las Brisas, January 1978. Aarons stands high and lets the rock fill the lower two thirds, so the woman on the mattress is the only soft thing among all that stone. The sea is not a colour but a light. A second frame of the same place and the same day sits beside it in the catalogue, taken from under the palms.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
