About this work

La Concha Clientele, 1972

A white beach club in terraces above the water, with pink mattresses on the steps and guests sitting or lying on them. Above them pink and white striped parasols, palms and a hill. At the bottom a wall of rough stone with an arch, and on the water a small white boat with two people in it, a woman in an orange bikini looking up.

La Concha Beach Club in Acapulco, February 1972. Aarons builds the picture in layers: the boat at the bottom, the stone wall, the terraces with guests, the parasols, the palms. Everything is white or pink except the people. A second frame of the same club in the same month looks the other way, down onto the villas on the cliff.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
