About this work
Eagle Club, 1969
A timber chalet with a thick load of snow on the roof, its terrace full of people at long tables in the sun. In front, dozens of skis stand planted upright in the snow. Behind the chalet the valley falls away to villages and woods, and above it stands a wall of snowy peaks, sharp and pointed, against a pale sky.
The Eagle Club at Gstaad, March 1969. Aarons sets the chalet on the right and lets the mountains above take the rest of the frame, so lunch turns small against the landscape. The skis in front say how everyone got here. A second frame of the same club and the same year looks from the other side, across the roof with its footprints.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
