About this work
Dining At The Eagle Club, 1969
A chalet roof under a thick layer of snow, a track of footprints running across it in loops. To the left a terrace full of people at tables; in front skiers in red and pink walk through the snow, and skis stand in racks along the wall. Beyond, the slopes fall away to a valley, with snowy ridges to the horizon.
The Eagle Club at Gstaad, 1969, now seen from the other side than the frame with the skis in front. Here the roof is the subject: someone has walked across it and left a loop in the snow. Aarons puts that track in the middle of the frame and keeps the diners beside it small. The mountains behind are the same, but further off.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
