About this work
Down To The Pool, 1979
Five women in swimsuits descend a rough stone stair between boulders, one after another, against a hard blue sky. Above them palm fronds hang over the rock; on the right a bougainvillea flowers in red and orange beside a large round boulder. The women wear brown, turquoise, red and white. The path runs from top right to bottom left.
La Barranca, Warren Avis' villa at Las Brisas, April 1979. The stair is the composition: a diagonal from top right to bottom left, with the five figures as knots along it. Aarons stands low and gives the sky two thirds of the frame, so the rock and the palms stand out against it. The pool itself is out of frame — they are still on their way.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
