About this work

Zermatt Skiing, 1968

In the foreground dozens of skis and poles stand planted at angles in the snow, like a wood without leaves. Among them skiers stand and sit, small and dark. The piste climbs to a cable car station, and above it a pointed, leaning peak rises from a ridge of snowy mountains against a deep blue sky, the sun just out of frame.

Zermatt, March 1968. Aarons shoots into the light, so the people turn into silhouettes and the skis into a pattern of diagonals. The peak at the back is the highest point in the picture and draws everything towards it; the skiers are there to give the scale. It is a landscape that happens to be full of people.

The photographer

Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
Aarons on his own work

George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.

His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.

Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
