About this work
La Concha Beach Club, 1972
Seen steeply downwards: a cliff with white villas under pink roofs, two small pools on terraces — someone sits in the upper one — and a tree leaning out over the edge. At the bottom a road winds along a wall of natural stone, with two pink and white striped jeeps. On the right a stair against the wall, bougainvillea everywhere. Beyond, the deep blue sea.
La Concha Beach Club in Acapulco, February 1972. Aarons looks from above and lets the sea fill nearly half the frame, even and dark, without a horizon. The villas hang off it like balconies. The two jeeps at the bottom give the scale, and the pink of their stripes returns in the roofs. Same club and same month as the frame with the terraces and the boat.

The photographer
Photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.
George Allen Aarons, born in New York, served as a military photographer in World War II and subsequently transitioned to print journalism. Whereas he previously documented the war, he deliberately chose the opposite subject: the leisure time of the rich and famous, in breathtaking settings.
His most famous photograph, The Kings of Hollywood (1957), encapsulates what he sought in all his portraits: glamour, charisma, and celebrity, captured in a relaxed manner.
Aarons won the trust of the people he photographed, thereby gaining access to some of the most intimate and candid portraits of the twentieth century. In 2007, Getty Images published the book Poolside With Slim Aarons , crowning his legacy.
